Your True Colors
What color are you? If you were given the choice to identify with a color derived from the fracturing of light, what would you choose? If I were a chameleon, I would select green because it is my favorite color. I would celebrate the imagery of freshness and downplay the taint of jealousy that is associated with turning green. On my toughest days I would bleed yellow and display a sickly chartreuse and on my best days, I would leak blue and exhibit a brilliant emerald. I would, naturally, endure the snobbery of purists who chose one of the primary colors because they feel ‘better’ for being unmixed. But we would have to downplay the RED because who really wants all that danger and drama? A part of the known world outside of Color Island would pooh-pooh us because we chose the American (color) over the European (colour) spelling of our name. Another segment of the population would envy our freedom all the while celebrating their uniform choice symbolizing unity and the benefits of conformity. The only oddballs would be the clear ones if it were even possible to emit NO color and the most widely accepted would be the grey because they would represent the mixing of ALL colors.
See? Even in a whimsical world of fantasy islands, there is prejudice. There are preconceived notions. In a human society, they are unavoidable when we have the freedom to choose anything without the knowledge of how our choices will influence everything around us. Without the infinite knowledge of cause and effect throughout time and space our indiscriminate choices tint the predominant color of this entire world. When you cry out to God the question, “Why do bad things happen?” and “Why is there evil in this world?” just remember the colors. The combination of every shade of every light ever shined by every person who has ever lived here from the beginning until now has influenced the palette splattered across the world today. As we have mainly chosen our own way, then predominantly we have unfairness, unkindness, thoughtlessness, greed, corruption, fillintheblank with whatever is evil. Thank God He still maintains sovereign power over all things lest we devolve into utter chaos. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
There is a word picture here for us. Every living thing emits a light. Every human being has been given a choice (free will) in the filter through which his light shines. These mingled lights give this earthly plane a color. Since God refuses to override our free will choice of color production, He uses His supreme power and knowledge to mix our colors for His ultimate goal – to reconcile all people unto Him – and produce the ‘color’ that aligns us with Him. (I like to think that ‘color’ is green… 😊) And it is only when we stop believing that God is good or think that God is not sovereign that we panic and can’t control our filters.
Remember: God IS good. God IS in control. Stay calm and believe that your true colors are the ones that God has given you. You are unique and your light gleams within a kaleidoscope we call the family of God. Altogether we combine to shine HIS light into the darkness.
